C.A. TRIPLEHORN INSECT COLLECTION
The C. A. Triplehorn Insect Collection is one of the foci of our research and
teaching program in arthropod systematics at the Ohio State
Department of Entomology.
The collection is housed in a
modern facility, the
Museum of Biological Diversity, on the western edge
of campus, and contains approximately 3.5 million specimens from all parts
of the world.
The historical emphasis has been in the orders Coleoptera
and Homoptera, but our interests are now concentrated on the Hymenoptera.
Funding for our
activities comes from a combination of sources, primarily
National Science Foundation grants and the endowment from
Josef and Dorothy Knull.
In addition to a complete suite of tools
needed for taxonomic and systematic studies, we have the facilities for
studies using geographic information systems and relational databases.
One of our principal emphases now is the development of tools and structure
for packaging and disseminating information from museum
holdings and literature: biodiversity informatics.
The availability of such cutting-edge
research and the wide experience of our faculty and staff distinguishes the
systematics program at The Ohio State University.
We welcome all visitors to the collection and any loan inquiries.
