POSITION DESCRIPTION: Assistant Professor, Tenure-track, 11-month appointment, 55% research, 45% extension, on insects and mites affecting woody ornamentals. The position is available July 1, 1996.
LOCATION: The Ohio State University/Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC), Wooster, Ohio.
QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph. D. degree in Entomology or related field with emphasis on integrated pest management. Postdoctoral or equivalent experience in pest management is desirable.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Ohio ranks among the top 10 states in nursery crop production, with yearly wholesale sales exceeding $350 million. The Christmas tree industry exceeds $20 million per year. Damage from insects and mites is one of the primary concerns in production of these crops in Ohio. The successful applicant will be expected to develop methods of pest management that improve pesticide efficacy and use, reduce reliance on chemical pesticides, and integrate other practices that are effective, economically feasible and environmentally compatible. The research program can be in any area related to the biology and/or management of pests attacking woody ornamentals, including Christmas trees. Cooperative research with faculty in the Entomology Department and other departments is strongly encouraged. The extension program will be to assist the commercial nursery, Christmas tree and urban arboriculture industries.
The incumbent will develop nationally-recognized research and extension programs, attract extramural funding, participate in national and international scientific meetings, advise graduate students, may participate in graduate and undergraduate instruction, work closely with commodity organizations, and publish research results in both peer-reviewed and trade publications.
