The focus of my research is the transmission of plant pathogens by arthropods,
especially maize viruses and mollicutes by leafhopper and planthopper vectors.
Other research is centered on evolution of the neotropical leafhopper genus
Dalbulus with maize and its wild teosinte and gamagrass relatives. Studies
with leafhoppers include systematics, biogeography, acoustic communication, host
finding, spatial and temporal distribution, overwintering biology and
associations with ants as well as the effect of plant pathogenic mollicutes and
viruses on the developmental biology and behavior of leafhopper vectors. I currently
serve as Associate Director of the Ohio Agricultural Research and
Development Center. I enjoy fishing for the larger edible
species and caring for the aquarium-sized tropical ones. I play competitive
tennis on a USTA senior team.
